Values Project - Lesson Plan Title:
Food and Food Groups
|
Subject: Science |
Keywords: Food groups, digestion |
Resources: Worksheets, computer, Encarta or equivalent |
|
Year Group: 8 |
Values: Valuing Ourselves |
Teaching and Learning Styles: Quiz, group discussion, brainstorm |
|
Context in which the lesson is set |
This work is intended to be carried out before a section of work on food
and digestion. Probably this would take place as the first lesson. The
extension work could be carried out at a later stage, and the quiz could
be used again at the end of the unit so that pupils could see whether
their viewpoint has changed. |
|
What the lesson is about |
The intention of the lesson is to allow pupils to consider their own
attitude to the food they eat. Do they stop to think about the quality
of their diet? Do they have control over their diet or is it largely in
the hands of other people? If they care about their diet, do they have
the necessary information on which to choose food. Are they aware of the
consequences of having a poor diet? |
|
Expected outcomes |
Pupils will have begun to consider their own attitudes to their diet.
They will start to appreciate that taking care of themselves by thinking
carefully about the food they eat is an important part of valuing themselves,
and will affect their health in years to come |
|
Details of Teacher and Pupil Activities |
Pupils begin by working together
in pairs, asking each other the questions on the diet
quiz sheet as a questionnaire. One of the pair asks the other
the questions and fills in the answers for them. Once one of the pair
has finished asking the other, they swap over and complete the other
person's sheet. As a class the questions can then be discussed and
a brainstorm chart produced on the board concerning the importance
of taking responsibility for the diet we eat.
Information from the "Diet for a Healthy Heart" sheet, and
other sources, can then be used to fill in the blank worksheet, to produce
a plan for a meal, a day's menu, or a week's menu which will be good for
keeping a healthy heart. |
|
Extension Work |
Homework or classwork could be used to research the importance of diet
in controlling or preventing other diseases |
