1 Lesson
Introduce the concept of world travel & locating ourselves. Why
is it important to understand longitude & latitude? Can use OGP1
pp 64-65 as stimulus.
How did early ships locate themselves & how do we do this today?
Read & explain the story of the earth as understood & explained
by people past & present. Focus on the role of Galileo in developing
our understanding of the earth as a planet. Allow class questions and
discussion.
In books each person explains the story as a time line, help given on
the board.

Notes
5,000 BC The Bible. . . . .
150 AD Ptolemy . . .. . .
1534 AD Copernicus
1633 AD Galileo . . . .
1665 AD Sir Isaac Newton
1966 AD The first space travel
Look at the idea of belief in God.
Imagine you were Galileo in prison, old & going blind. Write down how
you would explain your position and belief to the Catholic Church. (Do
you think this belief in mathematical explanation ran against the church's
beliefs in God & the bible?)
Issue This is a personal empathetic response and should not be 'led'
Share some of these thoughts with the whole class.
