Context in which the lesson is set |
After a unit of work on map skills
in the first half term we cover the topic of settlement and shopping
using the Oxford Geography Programme as our core text. We then follow
with a unit covering an in-depth study of the growth of Bristol as
an example of the growth of settlements. Integral to this is fieldwork,
following a trail on foot to observe and begin to analyse the areas
of change and type of activity now found in the centre of Bristol.
The docks field work is a half day and is combined with a boat trip
around the city docks.
Following this a look at transport development and our understanding
of the earth's shape & distances is taught.

Details of Teacher and Pupil Activities |
1 Lesson
Introduce the shape of the earth & the grid of longitude & latitude
on the globe/map. Learn to read & practise.
Look at resource in OGP1, pp 66-67. Do question 1 as in book &
run for about 10-12 mins to get familiar with the skill. Pupils work
in pairs.
Stop at a point when everyone has got the idea. Announce that Her Majesty's
Ship HM Nelson will be checking with the SS Great Britain on 30th November.
Please will the captain inform Her Majesty's ship of her predicted location?
On the way Her Majesty's ship HM Nelson will be checking all stated cargo
is recorded in the hold. The hold can take up to 300 tonnes. Goods must
be legally transported. Please list your cargo.
Pairs are asked to hold up their hand to inform location on 30th november.
The teacher checks as HM Nelson. Remind to plot wind & conditions
& produce an accurate log. Fine for 'Captain's Incompetence'. Highlight
the results of one or more checks for accuracy of location, log record,
accuracy of information on the contents of the hold. (The latter cannot
be checked - is it legal & adds up to 300 tonnes?).
At end of the lesson summarise the importance of legislation for ships
& travellers, on the records of location & cargo.
Truth is important for:
safety of crew & cargo, safety of other ships, especially rescue ships;
help people understand if/why difficulties/ sinking occurs;
insurance & influence on others if abused;
important to know route to get to next section of journey |
