Context in which the lesson is set After a unit of work on map skills in the first half term we cover the topic of settlement and shopping using the Oxford Geography Programme as our core text. We then follow with a unit covering an in-depth study of the growth of Bristol as an example of the growth of settlements. Integral to this is fieldwork, following a trail on foot to observe and begin to analyse the areas of change and type of activity now found in the centre of Bristol. The docks field work is a half day and is combined with a boat trip around the city docks.

Following this a look at transport development and our understanding of the earth's shape & distances is taught.

What the lesson is about Knowing and understanding the role of the Second World War in affecting the way our cities have grown, using Bristol as an example
Expected outcomes Knowledge & Understanding
The bombing raids on British and continental cities, where, when, why. The reason for Bristol's being a target of bombing raids. The effect on the city centre and the planning and renewal that followed, nature & aims.

Skills
Listening to and reading descriptions of WW2 air raids on Bristol's city centre. Photo analysis of past and present views of the central area. Thinking about & expressing thoughts & feelings about this
Details of Teacher and Pupil Activities Read an account of the effect of bombs on the City of Bristol. Pupils write down their feelings or those of the people of the city about this in silence. This may or may not be shared.

Look at photo resources showing the damaged centre & other well known areas (Resource 1). Identify these if possible using a street map or local familiarisation/recall. Write down the effects of the bombing on the city.

Using photographs & group knowledge look at developments that have occurred since bombing to repair the city. How have these changed the city - for better or worse? Discuss & possibly note this.

Read the story of the bombing of Dresden & the post war decision to forgive and reconcile in Coventry. Discuss the implication and meaning of the word forgiveness and the need to find a constructive way forward after hurt or damage. Relate this to the decision & strength to reconstruct. Possibly relate this to everyday occurrences. Write up in whatever format the pupil chooses the implication & importance of forgiveness. Poetry, text, drawing, script or lists are acceptable
