Context in which the lesson is set This lesson is the first in a series of lessons looking at geographical surroundings. Over several hours pupils build up a picture of their ideal town, giving reasons for their choices of who and what will be in their town. During this process pupils become familiar with the vocabulary associated with Persons, Buildings, and Rules. They also have the opportunity to consider the human qualities of the people in their town.
What the lesson is about In this lesson, pupils concentrate on jobs and occupations. The purpose is to become familiar with the kinds of workers that would be part of their town and decide what kinds of qualities they need to have.
Expected outcomes Pupils will be able to use sentences, in French, explaining why they have chosen to have a particular worker in their town. E.g. "I would have a Farmer because.........."
Details of Teacher and Pupil Activities Pupils are introduced to different professions and occupations using cards that are stuck on the board. These can be identified by looking up the meanings of the words in a dictionary. Pupils are then given other cards which have human qualities written on them. E.g. Trustworthy, Honest, Hardworking etc. These again can be identified using a dictionary. Pupils then match up the qualities that are required for a particular profession, choose which they would have in their town, and use the qualities to write sentences explaining why they would be included in their town.
